Yesterday, this massive sinkhole opened up in Guatemala City. (It looks photoshopped, doesn't it?!) It was caused by Tropical Storm Agatha. In Chimaltenango, the province where Panimaquin is located, at least 60 people were killed in a landslide. A three story building was swallowed by this sinkhole.

Everything started happening with the storm only two days after this volcano, Pacaya, erupted. Crazy enough, that is me in the lower left corner of this photo, climbing the volcano just last year. Pacaya has not erupted since 1976. 3 people were killed, 9 children reported missing, and over 20 people injured. The surrounding area is in a state of Public Calamity and the airport has been shut down until Saturday due to so much ash.
Please keep Guatemala in your thoughts and prayers as things seem to be going horrifically there right now. In those thoughts, include Panimaquin, its people, and my friend John staying there right now.
Wow, this is SO awful. I will most certainly be thinking of Guatemala and its people.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Sarah! That is so crazy. Thanks for posting this, and keeping me apprised of this situation. They'll definitely be in my thoughts and prayers.
